There are many programs that can prepare you for an apprenticeship by providing valuable counseling, hands-on training and help with the application process. If you have no previous construction experience, it is highly recommended that you consider a pre-apprenticeship. The following are some of the programs in Oregon and Washington:

Apprenticeship and Nontraditional Employment for Women (ANEW)

ANEW is a non profit organization which provides outreach , recruitment, skills training, case management, job placement assistance and retention services to low-income individuals who are interested in careers in the building and construction trades apprenticeships or related careers. ANEW provides outreach to low-income women and minorities who may not otherwise know of the opportunities available in skilled trades apprenticeships.

ANEW operates the The Apprenticeship Opportunities Project (AOP) that assists women, people of color and those facing barriers to employment in establishing careers in the building and construction trades.

ANEW provides apprenticeship prep training through partnerships with Community and Technical Colleges in both the Seattle and Tacoma area. ANEW is currently operating a training program with Clover Park Technical College.

Oregon Tradeswomen, Inc.

Oregon Tradeswomen, Inc. is a non-profit dedicated to promoting the success for women in the construction trades. They offer a FREE, seven-week women-only pre-apprenticeship program that includes classroom instruction, hands-on training, field trips, and strength training. You’ll learn how to use basic power tools and how to apply to apprenticeship. Come to an information session to find out about the next class and check out the rest of our website.

PCC Cascade Campus Skills Center Pre-Trades Opportunities
(Portland area)

The PCC Skill Center has partnered with ODOT in providing pre-trade opportunities to students who seek careers in the trades or an apprenticeship. These classes are designed to help students build the necessary skills to meet the minimum entry qualifications to enter a trade or apprenticeship program. Women and minorities wanting to enter highway construction are encouraged to apply.
Classes meet Mondays from 9am - 12 noon, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9am - 3pm.

Pre-Trade Minimum Requirements: Valid Drivers License or ability to obtain, Math 65 or Algebra, High School Graduate or GED
(Note: If you do not meet the minimum Pre-Trades requirements, do not be discouraged! This only means you have some additional steps to take before you're ready. The PCC Skill Center offers tuition free GED prep classes and Trade Math classes.)
For more information attend a Pre-Trade orientation. They are held very Tuesday from 11:30am to 2pm at the Cascade campus in the Technology Education Building (TEB). Check in with Katrina Cloud in office 103 or Lorene Wilder in office 124.

Constructing Hope Pre-Apprenticeship Program at
Irvington Covenant Community Development Corporation (ICCDC)

This program is tuition-free, three (3) month training module that prepares graduates with the basic skills for career advancement in the construction trades and or other apprentice programs. Although our past efforts have been primarily with ex-offenders, our pre-apprenticeship training is open to the general public including ex-offenders. We are seeking participants between the ages of 18 to 45. Classes are Monday through Wednesday from 8:00am until Noon including GED prep-classes in the afternoon. Constructing Hope work with local partners agencies such as Better People, Volunteers of America, Oregon and Metro Family Services to provide comprehensive services (tools, work clothes etc) for all qualified participants.

Portland YouthBuilders Construction Program
(Portland area)

PYB serves low-income people between the ages of 17-24 who have dropped out of high school. Students in PYB's Construction Program strengthen their futures while building housing for low-income families in the community. All students earn a stipend during this year-long program and there is no charge for tuition. Our students are required to be drug-free and are held to high performance and attendance standards. We offer very small classes, caring teachers, and help getting a good job, starting college or getting into an apprenticeship program.

Who: Young people age 17-24 who have dropped out of high school
When: Thursday from 1:00 – 3:30 PM (please arrive by 12:45)

Evening Trades Apprenticeship Preparation program
(Portland area)

The Evening Trades Apprenticeship Preparation program (ETAP) offers evening and weekend courses to women and men to prepare them for construction trades apprenticeships. It is a 10 week program requiring 260+ hours of in-depth training.
Requirements: resident of HAP Public Housing, recipient of Section 8, OR Low Income N-NE Portland Resident, and that you be 18 years or over.

Job Corps
(national)

Job Corps is a no-cost education and vocational training program administered by the U.S. Department of Labor that helps young people ages 16 through 24 get a better job, make more money, and take control of their lives.

Students enroll to learn a trade, earn a high school diploma or GED and get help finding a good job. When you join the program, you will be paid a monthly allowance.

Requirements: Be 16 through 24; Be a U.S. citizen or legal resident; Meet income requirements; and Be ready, willing, and able to participate fully in an educational environment.
